ABTA Is Urging UK Travellers To Check European Passport Rules
ABTA is reminding travellers to Europe that passport rules can be tricky, and unfortunately, some people are still being caught out by changes introduced over four years ago.
If you're planning a trip to the Schengen Area (which includes most European countries, plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City), your passport must meet these two key requirements:
- Issue Date: It must have been issued within the last 10 years.
- Expiry Date: It must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the country.
This means you need to check both the issue date and expiry date carefully.
ABTA's Four-Step Passport Check:
- Check FCDO Travel Advice: Visit the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website for the latest passport requirements for your destination.
- 10-Year Rule: Ensure your passport was issued within the last 10 years.
- 3-Month Rule: Confirm your passport is valid for at least three months after your planned return date.
- Renew Your Passport: If your passport needs renewing, apply online at Gov.UK for the quickest and most cost-effective method.
